Understanding the Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha

Pitta: the energy of transformation

Pitta is made of fire and a little water. It governs digestion, metabolism and the way we process both food and experiences.

  • In balance: sharp intellect, strong digestion, confidence and natural leadership.

  • Out of balance: irritability, heartburn, skin flare-ups, overheating and perfectionism.

  • Tends to be soothed by: cooling foods, time in nature, moderation in work and exercise, and avoiding skipped meals.

Kapha: the energy of structure

Kapha is made of earth and water. It provides stability, lubrication and strength, from the joints to the immune system to emotional steadiness.

  • In balance: calm, loyal, patient, with good stamina and sound sleep.

  • Out of balance: sluggishness, weight gain, congestion, heaviness and resistance to change.

  • Tends to be soothed by: light, warm and spiced food, vigorous exercise and variety in routine.

Why balance matters more than type

It is tempting to read the above and pick a label: "I'm a Pitta." But Ayurveda is less interested in your type than in your current state. The practitioner's word for a present imbalance is vikriti, and it can differ from your prakriti. Season, stress, age, food and sleep all shift it.

That is why a good Ayurvedic consultation looks at more than a quiz result. A practitioner considers your pulse, tongue, digestion, daily rhythm and history before suggesting changes.

Simple ways to start paying attention

  1. Notice patterns, not labels. When do you feel your best, and when do you feel off? Write it down for a week.

  2. Keep a steady daily rhythm. Waking, eating and sleeping at consistent times supports all three doshas.

  3. Eat with the season. Lighter, cooling foods in summer; warmer, nourishing foods in winter.

  4. Talk to a qualified practitioner before making major changes to your diet, or if you are managing a health condition.
